Moon Magic 101: How to Work With Lunar Cycles in Your Practice

The Moon is one of the most ancient and universal symbols of magic. Every tradition from ancient Babylon to modern Wicca has looked to the Moon for timing, power, and guidance. Learning to work with lunar cycles is one of the most accessible — and transformative — skills a witch can develop.

The Eight Moon Phases

New Moon

The sky is dark and the slate is clean. The New Moon is the best time to set intentions, begin new projects, and plant magical seeds. Write your desires in your grimoire, create a vision board, or perform a quiet ritual of intention-setting.

Waxing Crescent

Energy is building. Take your first actions toward your goals. Spells for attraction, growth, and momentum are supported here.

First Quarter

Push through obstacles. The First Quarter Moon asks for commitment and decision. If challenges arise, this is the energy to meet them head-on.

Waxing Gibbous

Refine and adjust. Your intention is taking shape. Fine-tune your spells, add detail to your plans, and trust the process.

Full Moon

The peak of lunar power. Charge your crystals, cast your most important spells, hold circle, and celebrate what has manifested. The Full Moon amplifies all magical workings and illuminates what has been hidden.

Waning Gibbous

Give thanks and begin releasing. The harvest is in. Start letting go of what you no longer need.

Last Quarter

The time of banishing and breaking. Release bad habits, sever unhealthy ties, cleanse your space, and shed what weighs you down.

Waning Crescent / Dark Moon

Rest, reflect, and surrender. The Dark Moon is for deep intuition, shadow work, and communication with spirit. Many witches fast, meditate, or do no magic at all during this phase.

Moon Sign Magic

Beyond phase, the zodiac sign the Moon occupies adds another layer of influence. The Moon moves through each sign roughly every 2.5 days. Moon in Scorpio favors deep transformation; Moon in Taurus supports abundance; Moon in Gemini aids communication spells.

Simple Ways to Work With the Moon

  • Keep a lunar journal — record the phase, sign, and any dreams or intuitions each night.
  • Charge water, crystals, and herbs under the Full Moon.
  • Perform cleansing rituals at the Last Quarter and New Moon.
  • Schedule your most important magical workings for the Full Moon or New Moon.
