Sigil Magic: Design, Charge & Release Your Own Magical Symbols

Sigil magic is one of the most direct and personally powerful forms of spellwork available. A sigil is a unique symbol you create to represent a specific intention — and once charged and released, it works on the deep, sub-symbolic level of the unconscious to bring that intention into reality.

The Theory

Popularized in modern times by artist and occultist Austin Osman Spare, sigil magic bypasses the critical, doubting mind by encoding your intention into an abstract symbol. Once you no longer consciously associate the sigil with its meaning, the unconscious can work with it freely — without the interference of lust-for-result (obsessive attachment to outcome).

Creating a Sigil

Method 1: The Letter Method

1. Write your intention as a present-tense statement. Example: "I am confident and clear in my communication."
2. Remove all vowels and any repeated letters. You're left with something like: MCNFDTLYRI
3. Using these remaining letters as building blocks, design an abstract, interlocking symbol. Overlap, rotate, and combine the letters until they form a unique shape.
4. Redraw the final symbol cleanly so it no longer looks like letters.

Method 2: Free Drawing

Enter a relaxed, meditative state, hold your intention clearly in mind, and simply draw whatever emerges without overthinking. This method is more intuitive and often produces striking results.

Charging Your Sigil

Charging is the act of pushing energy into the sigil. Methods include:

• Gnosis: Enter a state of heightened emotion or empty mind — through drumming, dancing, meditation, or laughter — and in that peak state, stare at the sigil and release it.
• Fire charging: Burn the sigil. The act of destruction sends the intention into the universe.
• Sexual energy: A traditional method — the sigil is burned or destroyed at the peak of arousal.
• Carry and forget: Place the sigil somewhere you will occasionally glimpse it but not consciously think about it — a wallet, under a dresser.

Releasing and Forgetting

Once charged, let it go. Do not dwell on it, obsess over outcomes, or analyze the sigil. The magic is working beneath conscious awareness. Trust the process.
