Crystals are among the most popular tools in modern witchcraft — and for good reason. Each stone carries a unique energetic signature shaped by its mineral composition, color, and formation. Learning to choose, cleanse, and charge crystals will add a powerful and beautiful dimension to your practice.

Choosing Your Crystals

There are two reliable methods: intention and intuition.

By intention: Research the magical properties of stones and choose one aligned with your goal. Clear Quartz for amplification, Black Tourmaline for protection, Rose Quartz for love, Citrine for abundance.

By intuition: Let yourself be drawn. Hold different stones and notice which ones feel warm, vibrant, or right. Your body is a sensitive instrument — trust it.

Cleansing Your Crystals

Before using a new crystal, clear it of any energy it has absorbed in transit or from previous handlers. Common methods include:

Moonlight: Leave on a windowsill during the Full Moon overnight. Gentle and effective for almost all stones.
Running water: Hold under cool running water for a minute while visualizing the energy clearing. (Avoid with water-soluble stones like Selenite, Halite, or Malachite.)
Smoke: Pass through incense smoke — sage, palo santo, or frankincense.
Sound: Use a singing bowl, bell, or tuning fork. The vibration disrupts and clears stagnant energy.
Earth burial: Bury in soil for 24 hours to 3 days. Especially effective for grounding stones.

Charging Your Crystals

Cleansing removes old energy; charging fills the crystal with fresh, intentional energy.

Under the Full Moon: The most classic method. Leave crystals in direct moonlight to charge with lunar energy.
In sunlight: Powerful for action-oriented stones like Citrine and Carnelian. Avoid with color-sensitive stones like Amethyst, which can fade.
Breath and intention: Hold the stone, take a deep breath, and exhale your intention into it. Visualize the stone glowing with purpose.
On a selenite slab: Selenite is self-cleansing and charges other stones placed on it.

Using Crystals in Practice

Place them on your altar, carry them in a pouch, arrange them in a crystal grid, add them to spell jars, or meditate holding them. The relationship you build with your stones deepens over time — the more you work with them, the more attuned they become to your energy.
