### Science & Origin of Himalayan Quartz

Himalayan Quartz is a rare and ancient type of Quartz found in the Himalayan Mountains, which stretch across Nepal, Bhutan, and the border between India and China. These crystals come in various sizes and shapes, including prismatic, tabular, clusters, and slender needle-like points. Himalayan Quartz is notably delicate, with some formations breaking easily in hand due to the brittle matrix on which they grow. Inclusions of other metals or minerals can alter their color. The most common variety is "Smoky" Himalayan Quartz, which gets its hue from natural radiation in the Earth. Iron can tint the Quartz from clear to yellow or light pink (also known as Samadhi Quartz), likely due to traces of phosphate or aluminum. Hematite inclusions give the crystals a red shade, often visible at their points.

### Rare Extraction

Himalayan Quartz is difficult to obtain because most deposits are located at high, steep elevations where machinery cannot be used. Each specimen must be extracted by hand, a painstaking process that limits the number of crystals that can be collected at once. The journey down to base camp with the fragile crystals is perilous, and some specimens are damaged or destroyed along the way. Tragically, the harsh conditions at the world's tallest peaks have also claimed human lives.
