Gyrolite, also known as Centrallasite, Glimmer Zeolite, and Gurolite, is a rare sodium calcium silicate hydrate mineral. As a member of the Zeolite family, it typically forms radiating spherical structures within basalt. This mineral is predominantly white but can also appear in shades of brown, grey, and, very rarely, green.
Gyrolite was first discovered in Scotland in 1851 at The Storr on the Isle of Skye. T. Anderson named it after the Greek word "Guros," meaning circular or round. Since its discovery, high-quality Gyrolite has been found in only a few other locations, including Poona, India; Northern Ireland; Italy; Greenland; the Faroe Islands; Canada; and the western USA. This mineral often occurs alongside other Zeolite minerals, particularly Okenite, as well as Prehnite and Apophyllite.
